Yohei Mito (水戸 洋平 Mito Yōhei) is one of the members of Sakuragi's Gang. He is also Hanamichi Sakuragi's best friend from childhood, as well as a skilled fighter. Yohei is the sole member of the gang who is able to help with actual advice and is also the best fighter out of the four aside from Sakuragi himself, having beaten up Mitsui all on his own during the gym fight. During the game against Ryonan, Yohei seems to be the only one to realize how Sakuragi felt humiliated after a lopsided loss to Fukuda.

Appearance[]

A young teenage male of average height, Yohei resembles a stereotypical banchō (Japanese delinquent), with his hair is styled in a pompadour with a few strands hanging down the front. His brows are also shaved and tapered at the ends.

Yohei is typically seen in his school uniform along with his blue undershirt, although he dresses casually when not in school.

Personality[]

Cool, collected and perceptive, Yohei is Sakuragi's trusted friend whom the latter relies on — first for his help when he decides to clean the sports hall and polish the basketball equipment.

Likewise, Yohei displays his unwavering loyalty and protectiveness when Mitsui Hisashi and his gang showed up at the sports hall to confront Miyagi Ryota, choosing to fight the gang on behalf of the basketball team and demanding that Mitsui promise to never disturb them henceforth. He, along with the rest of Sakuragi's gang, as well as Hotta Norio, take on the blame for starting the fight in order to protect the basketball team from suspension.

However, Yohei is also not above teasing his friends, such as when Sakuragi was rejected by a girl for the 50th time in junior high. He also makes fun of Sakuragi for fouling out in his early matches. Nevertheless, Yohei remains a true and loyal supporter of Sakuragi's journey from a bumbling beginner to a competent athlete, remarking that his friend was slowly adopting the mindset of a basketball player.

Plot[]

Together with Sakuragi Hanamichi, Takamiya Nozomi, Ōkusu Yuji, and Noma Chuichirō, the gang earned a considerable reputable as juvenile delinquents in Wakō Junior High — something which continued as the youth entered high school together. Whilst in Wakō Junior, Yohei witnessed Sakuragi's continuous rejections by the girls to whom he had confessed to, and even staged a celebration for his 50th rejection.

Yohei was present as Sakuragi made a determined announcement to pursue Akagi Haruko, suggesting that as girl as cute as she was could not single — and that perhaps the so-called "Rukawa" she was infatuated with was her boyfriend. Subsequently, when Sakuragi had inadvertently offended third-year students Norio Hotta and his gang. Sensing that his hot-headed friend was getting visibly riled up as the third-years barged into their classroom demanding a fight on the school's rooftop, Yohei intervened and confronted Hotta confidently.

As the gang arrived on the rooftop, they found that  Kaede Rukawa already handled all of Hotta's gang. At the same time, Haruko Akagi saw them and thought Sakuragi had fought Rukawa, giving him an injury. As she left in anger, Yohei and the others celebrated Sakuragi's failed attempts at a relationship. However, Yohei soon corrected the misunderstanding by explaining the entire situation to Haruko.

During the match between Akagi and Sakuragi, Yohei and his friends are seen betting on the winner.

Yohei and the rest of the gang are also present when Sakuragi finally joins the basketball team, although they do not let up their teasing as their leader is relegated to drilling the basics at the start.

When Sakuragi quits momentarily out of annoyance over the repetitive practice, Yohei and the gang accompany him to a nearby fast food restaurant. The group attempts to console their friend, but the gathering is soon interrupted by a rival gang who taunts them. As the two delinquent gangs confront each other in an alley, their leader remarks on Sakuragi's reticence, annoying him and earning him a kick in the groin. Sakuragi then announces his desire to return to the team, leaving the fight to Yohei and the rest.

While Sakuragi becomes more involved in basketball, the rest of the gang remarks on the monotony of their daily activities without their friend. Yohei, however, comments that Sakuragi has finally found something to concentrate his strengths on.

Later on, Yohei and Ōkusu stumble upon Noma and Takamiya as they spy on Miyagi Ryota, witnessing his rejection. The gang seizes this opportunity to make fun of Miyagi, but backs away when the latter threatens to fight Ōkusu. Yohei stops a clash from happening just in time, and takes responsibility for the misunderstanding.

The peace of the basketball team is broken by the arrival of Mitsui Hisashi, Tetsuo, Hotta, and other members of his gang. Yohei first encounters the gang as he leaves early after spectating Sakuragi's practice. When asked by Tetsuo on the direction of the sports hall, and quick to intuit that the gang had bad intentions, Mito attempts to stop them, earning himself a blow to the face and his body from Tetsuo, though he stops a kick with his school bag as a shield. Tetsuo sets the rest of the gang on Yohei, whom the latter quickly puts in place.

Though the gang is here to only confront Miyagi and intimidate the basketball team, the fight soon escalates when Rukawa and Sakuragi join the fray. Understanding that the basketball team will be in trouble should they are involved in an altercation, Yohei gathers the rest of Sakuragi's gang to fight Mitsui and the others. Specifically, Yohei singles out Mitsui as his target, and swiftly dispatches the senior with a series of punches, demanding that he promise to never disturb the team.

In the wake of the confrontation, Yohei and the gang accepts responsibility for the fight, earning himself a three-day suspension from school. He is seen by Haruko as the gang enters a pachinko parlor.

Entering the Kanagawa Prefecture Interhigh Tournament, Yohei and the others are always seen watching the games of Shohoku. In the match between Shohoku and Kainan, Yohei is visibly shocked, as with the other spectators, after Sakuragi makes a fatal error in passing the ball not to Akagi but to a member of Kainan's team. When Sakuragi fails to show up to school after the game, Yohei appears to be the only one who understand his friend's anger and embarrassment at losing and making such a pivotal mistake.

Skill[]

As expected of a delinquent, Mito is a skilled fighter, second only to Sakuragi Hanamichi. In his fight with Tetsuo, he is able to remain standing after receiving two successive attacks from the older man, using his school bag as a shield. Likewise, he also easily attacks Mitsui despire the senior being much taller than him.

Relationships[]

Hanamichi Sakuragi[]

Sakuragi and Mito have been best friends since they were very young. They care about each other very much, as he is always willing and ready to defend his friend, as well as help Sakuragi out when he needs it. Noma,Takamiya and Ōkusu[]

They are all apart of Sakuragi's gang, and are all close friends. The four are almost always seen with one another. Mito being an exception on a few occasions, but other than that they are rarely seen apart.
